About Pat
Pat made her first piece of patchwork at the age of 11, then later went on to run a business designing and making childrens appliqued garments. In 1990 she took part in the first C & G patchwork course in Scotland and then went on to open Scotlands first dedicated patchwork & quilting shop – Purely Patchwork in Linlithgoe.
Ten years on and Pat decided on a change of direction and made a move into teaching. Her work is exhibited widely in the Uk, Europe & USA.

Ghost Images of the Orient
Many of Pat’s quilts feature ‘ghosts’, translucent images of people or boats. Learn in easy stages how to create a translucent image of a Chinese junk sailing away into the setting sun using layers of nets and sheers and foils. As well as her ‘ghost images’ technique Pat will cover gilding and foiling in this workshop. Kits are supplied for this class. (kit price £15 )

Celtic Connections
Experiment with foiling onto fabric by superimposing a variety of gold, silver or copper Celtic motifs onto a background to produce a small A3 size piece with a contemporary twist. Pat will cover several foiling methods on the day as well as techniques for successfully working with iron-on bias tape. She will also tell you the stories behind some of her Celtic pieces and the origins of some Celtic designs. This project can be done by hand or machine although you may get more out of the day if you do manage to bring your machine. A kit can be supplied for this class containing a choice of designs and everything you need (except machine threads) for a successful outcome. (kit price £15 )

Japanese Inspirations
Japanese art is renowned for its classic simplicity and purity of form. Pat has made many pieces inspired by Japanese style and often uses the stylised family crest symbols in her work either as quilted, appliquéd or even painted and foiled designs. On the course choose one or more family crest symbols to transfer easily onto fabric using oil paint sticks and then quilt, add surface embellishment and stitchery. (kit price £3 for use of paintsticks & brush to keep)

Lilian Lives in Durham and has been quilting for over 30 years and has won many awards for her work.

The day will commence with looking at a selection of ‘Durham Quilts’, some of Lilian’s and some antique.
You will learn how to make a Durham Template without maths and learn an easy way to draw the Durham Running Feather.
During the day we will design and mark up a cushion front and you will also learn how to set up and dress a traditional quilting frame and even to have a go at hand quilting yourself.

Durham Quilting -Wholecloth or Strippy Quilt with Lilian Hedley
Sunday 21st October 2013 - 3 nights residential.
This is a stand-alone course or can be booked in conjunction with the one day workshop. Arrive in time for Dinner on Sunday (6pm).
Lilian will have various quilts available to show and to help define Durham Quilting.
You will learn how to make ‘North Country Templates’ without using maths and learn the easy way to draw the ‘Durham Running Feather’.
Lilian will show how to personalise traditional templates and make them fit any size required.
You will learn how to transfer your design to your fabric and where to start and finish your design.
For those wishing to make a strippy quilt, you will learn how to design your strips and how to join them together (the strips can be even or you can have a broad strip followed by a narrow strip).
A quilting frame will also be available and you will be taught how to dress this and how to quilt.
Lilian will be available up to 10pm each evening for those wishing to work late.
The price includes dinner, bed, breakfast, morning coffee, buffet lunch, afternoon tea & Lilians’ tuition.

About Gail
Gail is a well-known textile artist, author and teacher who had taught quilting in various different countries and throughout the UK. Her work centres around unique display pieces, many of which have won prizes; she loves working with variations of stained glass patchwork, which has become her signature technique.
Gail enjoys working with stitchers of all abilities, sharing her tips and techniques for using simple methods to create spectacular results. Even if you’ve never worked with these techniques before, you’ll find Gail’s methods easy to grasp and approachable; if you’re already an experienced stitcher, there will be plenty in the workshops to hold your interest and encourage you to develop your skills.

Stained Glass Patchwork
Use the easy and dramatic technique of Stained Glass Patchwork to create your choice of two sumptuous Venice scenes or a version of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's classic rose.
If you've never done stained glass patchwork before, this is an ideal class to learn; if you're already familiar with the technique, we'll explore lots of different ways of using and embellishing it.
We'll also cover working with fusible bias binding – a wonderful addition to the quilter's tool-kit! And during the day Gail will do a 'show-and-tell' of her own stained glass patchwork quilts that will give you loads of extra ideas.

Glimpses of New Zealand
Don’t miss this chance to create your own quilt inspired by Gail’s gorgeous book Glimpses of New Zealand; choose either the spectacular Seascape or the dramatic Maori Curves.
The Seascape is put together using simple machine piecing and then embellished with all kinds of threads, beads, sheer fabrics etc – a great project for experimenting with embellishment if it's something you've never tried. Maori Curves uses the stained glass patchwork technique covered in Day 1, and we'll explore different ways of quilting it by hand and machine.
Gail’s 'show-and-tell' today will be a display of her other New Zealand quilts – a breathtaking tour of the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Stitch Your Own Monet/Van Gogh
Have you always wanted to try machine quilting, but don't know where to start? Perhaps you've admired beautiful machine-quilted pieces at shows, and thought ‘I could never do that’. Well, now you can!
In this workshop we'll cover the first steps in machine quilting, which does just what it says on the tin; you'll be astonished at how many wonderful effects which you can create simply by using basic straight stitching on your machine. We'll also explore special effects which you can get using your machine's automatic (pre-progammed) stitches, and using a twin needle.
During the morning you'll assemble your choice of two easy fused designs, a water/leaf design inspired by the paintings of Monet or some bright sunflowers inspired Van Gogh.
In the afternoon we'll look at easy methods of machine quilting, and you can try your choice of techniques on your quilt. And let's not forget the 'show-and-tell'; today Gail will show you lots of her different machine-quilted pieces.

Great class for all those who wish to explore and experiment with some of Jennie’s many deliciously delightful textured and manipulated techniques.
Use these novel and simple ideas for garments, quilts, hangings or soft furnishings.
Learn how to construct and assemble a waistcoat or use the designs as a working sampler of innovative methods for textural creativity where-ever.
Add a little embellishment with some coloured thread or fabrics. Alternatively use some of the techniques for cushions and bags. Needs no previous experience of fabric manipulation merely an ability to sew a straightish line and a little creativity!

Thursday 20th March 2014 Machine Quilting
Are you happy with your machine quilting? Do you need to gain more confidence?
This workshop focuses on free motion quilting. Many patterns will be taught during the day with lots of encouragement to play with different threads.
The afternoon will be dedicated to feathers in many forms and there will also be the opportunity to ask for advise on quilting difficult quilt tops.
Suitable for all levels of ability.

A quick, fun to make, quilt based on a simple bargello design. A little, simple, sewing prep is required prior to workshop so that we can get the quilt assembled in the workshop. Large single/small double size quilt that can be extended.
