Machine Patchwork Workshops with Susan Briscoe

About Susan –
Susan is a renowned designer, textile artist, teacher and author of many books including bags, Sashiko and patchwork blocks. She studied at Cleveland College of Art & University College of Wales. After graduation Susan went to Japan to work as an English teacher on an exchange programme and this is where her Japanese influences come from.

Spinning Squares
Ideal for Layer Cakes or cut your own 10in squares. Make these fascinating blocks from wedge-shaped pieces, cutting with the 60-degree angle on your ruler (beginners) or varying the angles (intermediate), learning how to sew nice sharp centre points. This block puts your quilt in a spin, so get started with your own Spinning Squares. Finished quilt is thirty 8in blocks – we’ll make as many as we can on the day. *

‘Komebukuro’ are traditional Japanese drawstring storage bags and the 9in version makes a great craft workbag. A Jelly Roll version of Susan’s popular ‘Time and Again’ quilt. Learn how to piece with a ‘part sewn seam’, so your blocks seem to turn around and around. Great for batiks and directional fabrics too, while you can feature special fabrics in the block centre. Finished quilt is 60 x 38in.

You will learn how to make ‘North Country Templates’ without using maths and learn the easy way to draw the ‘Durham Running Feather’.
Lilian will show how to personalise traditional templates and make them fit any size required.
You will learn how to transfer your design to your fabric and where to start and finish your design.
For those wishing to make a strippy quilt, you will learn how to design your strips and how to join them together (the strips can be even or you can have a broad strip followed by a narrow strip).
A quilting frame will also be available and you will be taught how to dress this and how to quilt.
Lilian will be available up to 11pm each evening for those wishing to work late.

Lilian Lives in Durham and has been quilting for over 30 years and has won many awards for her work.

You will learn how to make a Durham Template without maths and learn an easy way to draw the Durham Running Feather.

Double Wedding Ring the Invisible Machine Appliqué way
Why bother with difficult piecing and awkward seams when you can make a lovely Double Wedding Ring using Invisible Machine Appliqué?
Dawn will teach her method of producing this beautiful, almost invisible appliqué by machine.
A few clever tips and you are on your way to making a sample 9 ring wall hanging. Once completed you will have instructions to make a full size quilt of your choice. Traditional or contemporary, the choice is yours!
Once this method has been mastered it can be applied to any traditional appliqué designs or even some of the traditional awkward quilt designs such as ‘drunkard's path’

Raw Edge Applique Workshops with Alison Bramley
About Alison –
Alison started making patchwork and quilted items after completing a City & Guilds fashion & design course at York in 1980 with a distinction.
Later she studied embroidery and design and gained a distinction from Loughborough.
She has entered various competitions and has won many awards, the latest being Festival of Quilts 2011 where Alison won The Quilters Guild Challenge.
Alison has also had many exhibitions and over the last ten years she has taught workshops and given many talks.
Alison likes to use silk for her work, but if you are not happy to use this then the Foliage can be made in normal patchwork cotton.

During this workshop Alison will be teaching her raw edged appliqué method using silk dupion.
She will be showing us how to make leaves and appliqué them with invisible thread to make a wall hanging or similar.
