Patchwork with Jan Hassard

29th /30th April & 1st May 2014

About Jan

She has studied and taught extensively in this country and abroad and has attended the Houston Quilt Festival many times, the New Zealand Symposium and other shows and events. Her work has been exhibited widely and won many prizes including the Quilters’ Guild Award for colour twice. For the past few years she has also taught a Master Class at the Festival of Quilts, held at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.

Focal points of Jan’s designs and ideas are usually colour and illusion, making the pattern form the three dimensional appearance of the finished piece. Most of her quilts are designed with workshops in mind, although some have to be adapted for samples that can be worked on in a day. Students always leave with an extensive handout, including coloured photos of the quilts, and are usually well on the way to achieving a finished piece.

Workshops & Retreat With Valerie Nesbitt
27th, 28th and 29th October 2014

About Valerie

Valerie is the founder of the patchwork shop Creative Quilting in Surrey which she opened in 1989 and where she continues to be part of the teaching team. She is also the founder of Justhands-on.tv, the UK's on-line tv channel for patchwork and quilting, where she presents a wide variety of workshops and co-presents with Jennie Rayment.

Monday 27th October 2014, 10am to 4pm, Triangles the Thangles Way

Do you shy away from triangles in your quilts? Is this because they never fit? Well let Valerie introduce you to the 'Thangles' way - fast, easy, no waste, and accurate - that has to appeal. Thangles have really come of age with our continued and varied use of 2 ½" strip rolls/jelly rolls but there is a limit to how many quilts you can make with rectangles and squares - so let Valerie open up your world to all those traditional blocks using half-square triangles (the single Japanese sampler quilt took just 15 x 2 ½" strips of the feature fabric plus background and border).

If you don't want to make a quilt, but just learn the technique there is a delightful little table mat that can easily be made in the workshop; again very economical use of fabric and pretty much any colour combination will work - so make an early start on Christmas for yourself or as a gift - or just make from fabrics you love.

Tuesday 28th October 2014, 10am to 4pm, Take Nine - Fat 1/4s that is

Want to make a dent in your fabric stash and/or use up that bundle you just couldn't resist at the last show? Well this is a delightful project that uses 9 fabrics that just love living together and was a great hit at the Justhands-on.tv weekend retreat in 2013; You get to learn how to use the rotary cutter to its best - i.e. cutting through multiple layers all at one - quickly and safely and then simple machine piecing, a little tip about how to shuffle the fabrics quickly without spending all day at it. Feature fabrics work well as well as bundles of batiks. Great for beginners and accomplished sewers alike.

Wednesday 29th October 2014, One Day Workshop 10am to 4pm, Crazy Patchwork

Valerie promises that this won't drive you crazy, it's another great way of using up Fat 1/4s from your stash (or a layer cake that is lurking) and again we get to use the rotary cutter at its best. Another layer, slash and sew block but Valerie makes sure that you keep yourself safe. Again we get to shuffle the fabrics quickly and easily and this works so very well with feature fabrics for boys or girls, theme fabrics, or just a few fabrics that you love together. Very economical - just 6 Fat 1/4s and a border make this snuggle quilt size - and the seam allowance doesn't matter! Just a warning - it can be addictive - you may want to make one in every variation! There is an alternative setting version of quilt-as-you-go and this could be covered for those who sew quicker - but a little more planning is needed prior to class.

ALL Workshops are £38 per day
Price includes morning coffee & biscuits on arrival, buffet lunch and afternoon tea & cake and not forgetting Valerie's expert tuition.
